We give you all the tips and building specifications to build your very own Minecraft subway…
Build Specs
Travelling around a city often means using a subway, whether that is the London Underground, the Paris Metro, or just a tunnel beneath a river or road. Why not modernise your Minecraft world with the latest in subterranean travel solutions by adding a subway?
Here are the things your build needs to have to qualify:
- A tunnel that travels a long-distance underground
- An entrance above the surface at either end
- Lights and signage to help people find their way
- Some automatic gates to control the flow of people
Other than that, you are free to try whatever you want!
Hints and Tips
When you start digging, make sure you have plenty of tools and resources with you, so you don’t have to return to the surface. So, you know where you are heading, a map might be useful, as you will be able to tell exactly where you are without having to dig your way up to check.
Make sure your tunnel is big enough. A 3x3 tunnel is a good start, but the bigger you can make it the less claustrophobic it will feel. Finally, if you have got friends playing with you, this is a good project for several people to do together. It is a lot of work, even in Creative mode, but on the plus side you will collect a tonne of cobblestone, iron and coal!
Finishing Touches
For the above-ground portions, add signage and a special combination of lights to show where the entrance is. New York has green and white lights; London has the red and blue roundel. You could use tallow and orange blocks to signify an entrance.
Create a turnstile using two fence gates and putting a pressure plate on one side of each this makes a simple but automatic one-way system that will stop people from rushing in and out. If you are really smart, you can try creating a payment system. There are several ways you can do it but think about using hoppers and redstone comparators.
What To Do Next
When your underground tunnel is built, maybe create a railway system in it? You will need to make sure it is fully lit so mobs don’t spawn inside! Can you use powered rails to create a minecart launch system?
Remember to place signs that explain where you are and where you can go. You could even put-up paintings to resemble advertisements!
Once you have connected two places, build tunnels to even more to create a large network of subway stations. The advantage of an underground network is that you cannot be ambushed (as long as the tunnels are well lit and sealed), and the flat terrain means you can travel super-fast!
